So starting on…

Hi Anya, I found your blog when I was looking over my friend’s shoulder at her dash (she’s a Moriarty fan too). I saw your post on weight, and I appreciated its maturity – no calling yourself ugly, no blatant attention seeking, etc. And I can totally identify with it – I’ve been your weight, and I find that exercise/eating right will improve your mood, give you energy, help you to sleep better, add variety/fun to your routine, make things like stairs less evil, and many other benefits. HOWEVER. You need to ask yourself - why do you feel you need to lose weight? What is it about the numbers that you need to change or get to?

Because, keep in mind that the BMI scale which claims to calculate percentage of body fat in fact does NOT do that, since the only measurements it takes into account are height and weight. It does not take into account factors like ethnicity, bone structure, and especially muscle mass. According to the BMI chart, most weight lifters would be obese, and many people who start to exercise are dismayed that they are gaining weight, when they are gaining muscle.

Additionally, weight is a lot more fluid than people think. Your weight can be pounds different in the morning/afternoon/evening, before/after eating or going to the bathroom, and before/during/after menstrual cycle. Even though weight is an easy, concrete way to measure your health, it is constantly fluctuating naturally. It can also be just plain unreliable as an indicator of health (do you know anyone who appears to be a perfect weight, but doesn’t exercise and eats unhealthily?)

Again, the earnestness and consideration in your post was refreshing, an I don’t mean to say that you are ignorant of the stuff I mentioned. In fact, I’m probably preaching to the choir. But since you were on the right track, I just wanted to remind you and whoever happens to see this that the “your health is more than a number” thing isn’t just a slogan to boost people’s confidence. It expresses the fact that weight is complex, multi-faceted, and a poor indicator of health.

p.s. Also, you say that you created your own “safe and responsible diet,” which means that you’re probably avoiding short term/fad diets. So maybe you already have in mind that smaller long-term/lifestyle changes, like drinking less soda, are more effective than dramatic short-term changes, like cutting all carbs, since your body will bounce back from that as soon as you stop. But like I said, you already know that. :)

Did this particular split up seem, maybe, unnecessary? In an in-universe and plot sense?

There is much evidence of their affection. Most dramatically, Rory showed Amy supernatural devotion by watching her box for 2000 years, and she says that her love of him surpasses the love he has for her. THAT IS A LOT OF LOVE GOING ON.

So, why would she not do the communication thing and tell him about her infertility? I can only imagine what it would be like to really want to bear children and be physically unable. But I feel like Rory would have dealt with it, due to all the aforementioned love, and that breaking up for solely this reason gave them both extensive and unnecessary pain.

And it’s not like they would have had to even sacrifice children, which was the entire reason she broke up with him. With their double income (one in media/beauty and one in nursing), they should for sure be able to afford a surrogate or something

DUN DUN DUNNNNN

For the most part, references to adoption in the media are either nonexistent or in a negative light. For example, the one in Avengers (“Loki is my brother!” “But he killed a ton of people!” “…he’s adopted?”). I was cool with that, because it was brief and hilarious. But the apparent lack of consideration for adoption in this case made an entire plot point.

And as far as its relationship to the plot, it was out-of-nowhere, and the end of the episode implied that they got back together. So this sudden super-drama-y thing wound up being for naught.

Is there more to the breakup that we don’t know? Maybe something will come up later, but right now it looks like a sentimental plot point that was shoe-horned in for quick drama.

- Oh my, this is exciting news.

I’m terribly fond of Mark Ruffalo and it’ll be great to see him in this kind of role. My college performed The Normal Heart and it was such a great play. In addition to being informative and emotional without being sentimental or heavy-handed, the groceries scene was one of the most elegant, awful, and beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen, so I’ll probably remember this play my whole life.

I know why they didn't officially include Doctor Who in the ceremonies.

I cannot reiterate how infuriating it is to know there is a place where dinosaurs are real, but that Jeff Goldblum doesn’t live there. In this humble cinephile’s opinion, Goldblum’s performance as the charismatic chaotician, Dr. Ian Malcolm, elevates Jurassic Park from hum dum popcorn flick to true art. The Savage Land is nothing like the film, Jurassic Park. It’s filled with annoying people and their annoying saber tooth tiger companions. The people only wear pelts and therefore have no enthusiasm for great costume design or pattern making. Worst of all, there is no gift shop. If I have to spend a few days of my life tossing rocks at a Tyrannosaurus Rex, then I want to be able to purchase a fanny pack to commemorate the experience. Did you know that in the Savage Land, smug cripples can walk again? When smug cripples aren’t crippled anymore, they just become smugger. They mock you for tossing rocks at a Tyrannosaurus Rex and remind you that you still owe them $14 from a shuffleboard match in 1962.

I really wish Jeff Goldblum was my best friend.

Perhaps people believe that when one’s sexual organs show, the image is inherently sexual. That would explain why the female body is artistic and the male body is pornographic. (“Sexual” and “pornographic” are not synonymous, but that’s a different point.)

However, images of sexual organs are not always sexualized. Pornographic and sexualized images depend on both the artist, in the tone of the piece, and the audience, in how they perceive it.

If you see a nude with a penis, you probably think of sex.

But if you see a nude with a bellybutton, do you automatically think of birth? Probably not, unless you’re an OB/GYN.

And if you see a nude with a nose, do you think of breathing or smelling? Probably not, unless you’re an ENT doctor or a perfumer.

The thing is: you probably think this because you were raised to always associate penises with sex, since they stigmatized and never put in plain sight. In fact, the nose spends a lot more time doing things than the penis, so why is the association weaker for non-sexual parts? But there is no stigma about bellybuttons or noses, because socially, they’re just parts of the body. They’re just there.

However, if you just think penises are ugly, that’s a different thing. Of course you’re gonna think something’s ugly if it’s often feared, rarely seen, and kind of sticking randomly out of the body.

Maybe our attitude will change if we see penises for what they are - a part of the bodies of half of the people in the world that does stuff sometimes. And become accustomed to them by looking at more good nudes with penises.
